Wanting to get into a bit of Quartz but I'm not sure what hardware I
need to buy and could do with some recommendations.
I'm presuming a Macbook Pro is what I want - 4GB ram? I'd like to run
as high a resolution as possible - 1280x1024 preferred but a minimum
of 1024 x 768. Maybe a 2 or 3 vid clips running at the same time and
3D layers.

I'd highly recommend any mac without an Intel video card. It'll work fine even on such macs (I've got an early '07 MacBook, for example, and it runs most compositions well), but you'll quickly hit some walls that you can't upgrade out of. 4GB of ram is a bit excessive, but not really cost prohibitive -- I've been running QC with 1.25GB for about a year now, and the only time I hit memory problems is when there's a memory leak in some of the patches :)

You might run into some performance problems using video clips if they're generated inside QC -- this is more of a QC/QT bug than it is a hardware configuration issue. Just a heads up so you know better than to pull your hair out if it acts strangely.

At NAB this week there were a bunch of demos running HD compositions at 1920x1080p, and those were driven by year-old MacBook Pros without any problems.
