At NAB this week there were a bunch of demos running HD compositions at 1920x1080p, and those were driven by year-old MacBook Pros without any problems.

But, were they playing back QT movies at that resolution or were they doing synthesis/GL ?

It was typically a combination of both; they'd overlay sprites, billboards, and primitives (textured cubes mostly) on top of HD video (or, composite a few HD videos simultaneously with decorative separations). Some of the more sophisticated demos would allow you to feed that all through various filters and stuff. Nothing terribly demanding, but it was impressive nonetheless. Maybe I'm just easily amused :)
