I assume this is taking one thread and changing it to another subject WITHOUT changing the subject line.. As for the QC list - I have no idea? Bad netiquette? Definitely in my book - it makes an absolute mess of Mail's threading.. I think there is someway to split and rejoin threads, but forget what it is (and if you respond to that question on-list, please do put it in a separate message). IMO there should be a checkbox (default off) that reads 'start a new thread' that will clear out the References header or whichever header Mail uses to put together message threads..
At the very least make the subject line new (like this one). Not perfect, but gives an idea of which messages in a thread are actually in response to the original post. There's an idea - if mail would do hierarchical message threading, although I'm not sure that's possible given the headers.
