I am also encountering the same problem with alpha channels and displaying a PNG file with a billboard patch.I am running OS 10.6.1 on a Mac Book with a GMA X3100.
Check for GLTools.plugin -- if it's there, remove it or upgrade to the latest version. (holy cow, I should start working for unsanity or something with how much upgrade-brickage I've caused ;)
If that's not the problem, please post more details (some screen shots, a sample composition + image, etc).
