Speculation aside, OpenGL ES supports programmable pipeline and
fragment/vertex shaders, so in theory at least a minimal subset of
Core Image (CI-ES) may be possible.
I would like to see a minimal QC implementation on the iPhone, but
honestly I would be very surprised as unfortunately it seems like the
technology is not really well known outside of many circles, and it
seems like few people see its inherit power and flexibilioty. I hope I
am wrong, as it could prove amazingly useful to devs outside of QC
land as well (having to port or make Core Image ES would allow it to
have an API outside of QC, which many would like to see I am sure),
but sometimes I feel like Apple does a poor job of even letting people
know about Desktop QC.
Anyway, this would be great to see.
