I think if you've updated a 10.5 system to 10.6, it will have stuffed it in the 
Utilities folder in the Applications folder (not 100% sure). It's not QT X, it 
will be some version of QT 7. I don't know if I ever tried registering it in 
10.6+, so I'm not sure if that works, or if it already had to have been 
registered in 10.5.

QuartzCrystal is pretty solid and has compatibility with a large amount of 
plugins (almost all), whereas I think the QuickTime route may have some issues 
loading 3rd party patches even when it is working. 

After using QuartzCrystal, you can always open up Quicktime (any of them), and 
then do something like "convert to web", or encode w/ H264, etc. QuartzCrystal 
doesn't have a built in double pass encoding (like iMovie or Quicktime might), 
so movies may seem larger for level of visual quality. 

It's pretty common to work with large uncompressed files while editing, and 
then compress to suit the final media later on.
