Tim, both your screenshots show the same screen, can you please repost the screenshot of the search results?
I think what Tim is reporting is when we import multiple digital objects then we create a new archival description for each imported digital object which is a child of the original archival description. This enforces the ICA-AtoM policy of a maximum of one digital object per archival description.
In this case if you had an archival description (file A) which had a keyword (say "university") in the title, then imported 10 digital objects as children of file A (titled "item 1" thru "item 10") then searching for "university" would not show any of the item level descriptions, and the file A description would show no thumbnail.
