I compiled ntp-dev 4.2.7p448 on the CubieBoard2 (ARM processor) and added
a "pool pool.ntp.org" line to the config. It does not work.

Add options:

pool pool.ntp.org iburst minpoll 6 maxpoll 6 preempt

as iburst allows eight quick packets to be sent to setup reach
and sync quickly; I remember some discussions about poll 6 being
required for 4.2.7 (or was that only on Windows?); preempt allows
ntpd to drop poor quality servers and pick new addresses.

It is considered polite and does not invite DDoS to allow sources
to query you, as you trust them to serve you time, so use:

restrict -4 source notrap nomodify
restrict -6 source notrap nomodify

A few (new model) PPS and GPS standard ref clocks, servers,
(commented out?) and pool definitions with all the required
commands and options could usefully be added to a sample
/etc/ntp.conf.
These could of course be overriden by each distro and user
but could reduce setup confusion and bad practices by
distros and users.

Take care. Thanks, Brian Inglis
