HI, I'm afraid price is going to be your problem here.
The only way to get a good recorder that does not compress is to purchase
something like the edirol r-09, we have one and it's brilliant even with the
internal stereo microphone.
The hr wasn't available when we bought ours and I haven't had the time to do
a valid side by side comparison yet but they look like a nice unit.
I didn't like the olympus at all in terms of sound quality but it is more
accessible than the edirol in some ways.
My main con with the edirol is that it's impossible, without using
headphones, to know whether you are actually recording or not.
Also, there's no easy way to tell when the batteries are running low and
they are real battery hogs.
Pretty much everything else though is accessible enough although you'll want
to get some assistance setting the date and time etc.
Note: you don't have to do this the machine records fine without you doing
so but your date and time stamps will be incorrect is all.
Also, we don't like the AGC on it and seldom use it but this is personal
taste.

My dad recently got an Olympus DS-50 which records WMA files. Are
there any reasonably-priced equivalents which record to uncompressed WAV
files? The reason I ask is, I may sometime take a trip to one or two
telephone museums where they have old electromechanical switches in
working order. I'd love to be able to record the various noises these
switches make, but don't want compression in any way distorting the audio.
What's the most reasonably-priced such recorder that's also good from an
accessibility standpoint?
