The ds-40 has a microphone built into it that's mono, and a stereo
microphone that basically clips onto the top of it. The stereo microphone,
in my opinion, is not the greatest, although i still use it sometimes if
necessary since I don't have anything else to record in stereo. However, the
mono microphone is actually pretty nice. I can send a sample if you want.

Doesn't the DS40 have an internal stereo mic? I have always thought so.
As for the recommendations I have a Zoom h2 and found it amazing. It's not
the best in terms of accessibility but basic record / playback / mic
pattern / gain is reasonably well useable.
