The auto-lauch DISPLAY setting has changed in Xquartz so R was assuming you're 
enforcing X11 by having a custom DISPLAY setting. This should be now fixed to 
detect the new setting n 3.1.2.

Too late now, but the problem with the original patch is that it used a NIB 
which we want to avoid as to not have to ship resources. If you know how to fix 
the *code* then sure, I'll consider it. Feel free to discuss directly with me.
