Dear Hans-Jörg,

Here is what I did:

 > require(sound);s <- Sine(440,1)
Loading required package: sound
Warning messages:
1: In findWavPlayer() : No standard wav player known for your system.

2: In setWavPlayer() :
   To play sounds you need to select a wav file player first.
For more information type '?setWavPlayer'.

 > setWavPlayer('QuickTime Player.app')
[1] "WAV file player 'QuickTime Player.app' linked successfully."
 > WavPlayer()
[1] "QuickTime Player.app"
 > play(s)

I could hear nothing. Then:

 > findWavPlayer()
NULL
Warning message:
In findWavPlayer() : No standard wav player known for your system.

When I double clicked that file, it played in iTunes.app.

I tried:

 > setWavPlayer('Audacity.app')
[1] "WAV file player 'Audacity.app' linked successfully."
 > play(s)

Nichts.
