#### Thanks for the updates, Neil. We seem to have been getting
Auckland-type weather up here (showers, fine spells, strong winds, more
showers and the pattern repeated endlessly), which shouldn't do the track
too much harm . . . not much different from an intensive watering programme.
As long as today's showers weren't too heavy and there's a bit of sun and
the wind blows tomorrow, the track should come up quite well — around the
2.6-3.0 mark. And I'd rather have natural watering of the track than the
club's sprinklers . . . which tend to put some parts of the track over 4.0
and leave other parts 2.0 — then they tell you they've got a 3.0 track.

I'll be leaving the handicaps alone tomorrow. La Sizeranne looks a put and
take in the fillies race . . . I'm picking the big field will ensure a
genuine pace and she'll outfinish these. My take on Basra is that if she was
any good, she'd be staying at home to chase the really big money over there.
Coming to NZ, looking for easier races, will provide Waterhouse with an
appreciation of the strength of Kiwi three-year-olds.

The Derby looks the best in years and my inclination is to attack the
trifecta. Cheval De Troy, Jonathan Josh, Mandela and Xcellent are the win
chances and also look to have the quinella sewn up. Impressive as he's been,
I don't rate CDT that far ahead of the other three, if at all. Since the ARC
introduced the Derby Trials, the Avondale Guineas has remained the better
guide to Boxing Day and Mandela beat what I'd rate as the better field on
Dec 12. Jonathan Josh's run when second to CDT was the better effort and
Xcellent could be one of those freakish horses which turn up every 10 or so
years.

Good punting everyone.

Gil
