Only watched replays of yesterday's races but did catch the information that
a bet of $30,000 was placed on Cheval De Troy in the Derby. Fair enough, if
you've got that sort of money . . . he was, by common consensus, the leading
chance.

But the odds . . . $1.85!!! Where has this guy been the past couple of
weeks? Did he rob a bank yesterday morning? Did his grandfather die on
Saturday night? Where was he when the $3 or even $2.50 was on offer?

And what did he think the other 17 runners were lining up for? Just to act
as support cast for CDT's starring role?

I've backed odds-on chances in my time . . . but never in a race like this,
never on a horse untried at the distance, never against such quality
opposition.

Brother, bring on licensed bookmaking in New Zealand. I'd love to have my
board and bag under an umbrella at Ellerslie if there are spendthrifts like
this bloke wandering round.
