By discourse, I mean conversation, I mean exchange of ideas. A civil exchange of points, and ideas. Let me then ask the awkward question, which was the root of my conflict with Libertarians: What do you mean by “rational discourse?”
For me, “rational” means “maximal use of available data” by being:
1. clear about assumptions
2. excited to explore logical consequences of beliefs
3. hungry for better data
4. readinesses to adapt beliefs based on better information
I have painfully learned that this is not always what others mean, and would prefer to not make that same mistake. :-)
