As bpa has said, more tactfully that I probably would have, this was debated at length in the beta test program.
However, the decision to require the initial connection for firmware updates is set, and I can't see it changing in future. What I still don't think Logitech has got quite right is communicating the impact of that decision to purchasers at point of sale. To my mind, the fact that the Radio effectively requires an internet connection on first use should be made very clear on the marketing bumpf.
