Yeah, it probably is quite different than Roku designs. But then controlling SBS (which in turn controls your players) gives you much more control and customizations. Even when using the players IR remote, most player functions are SBS controlled. So IR input into the player simply sends the request back to SBS, SBS performs the function, sends the result pack to the player. You should be able to use the Bonjour service (or something like it) as well.
