I think it is perfectly reasonable to expect that if you connect your device to Logitech's service that it will require you to update to the latest firmware. Anything else would make it much more difficult for the service to move forward.
On the other hand it is also completely reasonable for you to be able to run your own server and never update anything ever again. However, you must be willing to accept that some things may stop working if the external environment changes (OS version, online services change protocols, etc). It's a matter of picking your poison.
