@erland: I saw commits from Ben on the 7.6 branch to make the fallback
alarm fade in as well. That should stop the heart attacks (though I
didn't test this firmware yet nor do I now if it has ben released
already for the Radio).

Having said that (using a local server) I have a reliable alarm, waking
me up every morning to my favourite radio stream.
In the two cases where internet failed I was woken up by the fallback
alarm.

Alarm with a local server can be considered robust since the 7.4.2
firmware version, since then nothing really notable has happened to the
alarm code (except sending WOL events and fading in alarms in 7.6).

I don't have experience with alarms on mysqueezebox.com but there are
also reports that the alarm can be made working there.
I'd go as far as to claim that (if you configure alarms directly on the
Radio) you should get at least reliable fallback alarms (which might not
be the ones one want to hear).
Many users have more luck (when they want to hear the actual stream)
when they use 'odd' alarm times (6:57 instead of 7:00) as the logitech
servers have to serve less alarm signals at these times.

It's also important to choose reliable streams as alarm tunes which are
in the following order (most reliable to unreliable):
- local mp3 served from a local server
- radio streams from big radio stations
- radio streams from small radio stations
- alarm tunes (which are streamed from mysqueezebox.com which I would
consider most unreliable at common alarm times).

Another common error regarding alarm stability is switching often
between local server and mysqeezebox.com. If you do this one had to go
into more details what the pitfalls are.
