Using the desktop was just the easiest way for me to keep a
connection up to troubleshoot the problem.  It ended up having the
unexpected benefit of keeping the wireless connection from dropping. 
I'm sure if I install a script to send packets occasionally from the
radio itself it should have the same effect.

There's no connection sharing being used, just a simple Linksys
WRT54GL access point with DD-WRT installed.  I've never used SBS and
I've never seen the blue warning icon.  I either get white and full
connection or red and no connection.
