Sounds like you are on the right track -

I suppose you know that the devices marketed as AP's are just routers
w/out DHCP - and much more expensive than a router - Go figure.

My Belkin 8230 router has an AP mode that it can be switched to -

But you can do the same thing with any router by putting the IP address
of the wireless router in the wired LAN's subnet, setting up security,
channel, SSID, etc, and turning off DHCP - The access mode just turns
off DHCP and puts it in the wired LAN's subnet.

If you end up using a Belkin 8230, when you enable the AP mode, it will
offer to assign an IP address of 192.168.2.254 - That's fine if your
wired router is also a Belkin - But if it's another brand, it's likely
got another subnet address than the Belkin's default of "2". Just
change the wireless router's subnet to the same subnet as the wired
LAN. and again, don't select an address for the wireless AP that is
inside the wired router's DHCP range. And don't forget to connect the
cable from the wired LAN to one of the LAN ports on the wireless router
and leave the WAN port empty.

Do I understand you correctly that your curret cable/DSL router has to
have DHCP set up to work? That's something I've not heard before.

Have you tried this:

Make sure that your computer has it's ethernet adapter set to
automatic, and not set up with a fixed IP address.

Do whatever your A/P's manual says to reset it to Factory Default

Connect the WAN port of the router that you want to be an AP to the
ethernet port on your computer.

Open a command Prompt and type in "ipconfig /all", without the quotes.

Scroll down until you see the Gateway Address - That is the address of
the router that your computer is connected to.

You will also need the two DNS servers from that screen - Copy them
down.

Open a browser and click on stop - It's not connected to the internet,
so no need for it to keep looking.

Open a browser and type in http://(Gateway Address) - Using the real
Gateway Address, of course.

That should give you access to the wireless router's administration
page - there will be no pasword, since the router has been reset.

Set the channel number if you wish, or just leave it on auto.

Set the SSID to what you want it to be.

Delete any Domain name, unless your ISP requires it.

Don't turn off DHCP yet - You will still need it for a bit - Each time
you make a change, the router will restart and you want to be able to
get back in.

Go into the DNS settings - Uncheck auto and put in the two DNS
addresses from the ipconfig screen.

Set up WPA or WPA2 wireless security. Use a unique password - with WPA,
you will put that same password into the adapter when you first connect
to it - None of the WEP 26-digit stuff required - and WPA is supposed
to be more secure.

Set the time zone in the router setup, if required.

Set up a security password for accessing the router - You will now need
to put in the password you set up to access the router.

Now set up the IP address of the wireless router to be in the wired
router's subnet - The router will restart - When it completes you will
not be able to connect because you have changed the address of the
router - Enter the new IP address into the browser's address bar.

Last thing - Now turn off DHCP and log out of the router. The wireless
router will no longer respond to the computer that it is directly
connected to, since the wireless router no longer has DHCP - It's now
an AP.

Connect your computer back to the wired LAN.

Connect the AP to the wired LAN via one of the wireless router's LAN
ports - Leave the WAN port open.

On your computer, you should have full network and internet access
again.

If your computer has a fixed IP address, you can set it back to a
static address now.

Type in the IP address of the AP that you just set up - That will
access the AP's admin page, since the AP is now on the Wired LAN subnet
and using the DHCP of the wires LAN.

That should do it - Let me know how it goes.
