When there is an alarm event the volume button acts as snooze. When there is no alarm going on, it is mute. Just like pushing the big button does one thing when an alarm is playing (turn off the alarm), and something else when an alarm isn't playing.
As long as you can still get a Boom (eg, they are still in stock at Amazon, where they just had a very good discount), what does it matter if it's EOL?
