After buying a "kill-a-watt" meter I was amazed at the vampire draw in my house when I added it all up (even the washer and dryer have idle draw). Now when we will be away for more than the day I take 2 min. and unplug stuff / turn off power strip switches / turn off wall switches / turn off breakers. When I look at year to year comparison power use it is actually noticeable. Our power company also send power use "report cards" which mainly (anonymously) compares usage among similar houses in the area and lets you know how your use compares to your neighbors and there is a noticeable change there also.
