I think it's sorted.... I restarted LMS and it accepted my registration. I then closed ORB and rebooted the SB. It worked fine, so I restarted my PC (ORB is set to start automatically) and I now have the SB running OK, swapping between LMS and IR. It has also remembered the applet. ORB is happily serving my Freecom Musicpal in another room and I THINK all might be well. Thanks for your time and thoughts.
