I'm not sure about radio at all, just throwing in some speculations.

why not 100% thats how the Touch works afaik only output from DAC
changes .

100% does not need to be a lot of gain=noise , the gain scaling could
be sane.

However the problem could be possible to solve if I'm wrong and the
volume data goes to an vca an analog side.

But lets try the boom as it is different, and may have an altogether
different way of doing this:

Aha on the Boom you can control volume for line in from the web-UI or
iPeng cool :)
