In the server.prefs file under the appropriate MAC ID you'll find "digitalVolumeControl:". It should be set to 1. It was set to 0. After a server restart the new value took effect. I'm not sure how or why it happened.
I totally missed that other thread. Thanks for digging the solution. I must fix that...
