The very slightest movement of a WiFi device and/or it's antenna can sometimes make a very noticeable difference. In troubleshooting networks I can slighly change the angle of the routers antenna and this can sometimes mean a 10% or greater increase in signal quality. About the worst spot to place a WiFi router is right near any other electronic equipment (computer, modem, phone, etc..). Then there are unknown (and changing) environmental factors like neighbors using new devices, other WiFi's, cordless phones, microwave ovens, appliances, etc...
