Just an update - so, it was (easily, if a tad hidden in the Menus....) possible to disable WiFi6 / 802.11ax, and everything (including the old laptop) works fine.
The family have had enough of my "messing about" for the moment, but a tad later I'll try re-enabling WiFi6, and see if the kit "holds" its now-established connection or cuts out..... Back in the day, I did have some kit in the system that would not do a first connection if 5Ghz was enabled along with 2.4Ghz at the router, but would hold its 2.4Ghz connections when 5Ghz was re-enabled. So I'm wondering if WiFi5 and 6 may have a similar quirk, at least on this router?
