First off, I think it’s pretty neat that OpenGeofiction values upstream enough
to contribute, even if our goals don’t turn out to be completely aligned.

I can certainly see how GPS traces would be absurd for OGF, which doesn’t
attempt to maintain any earthbound reference points and can’t afford to launch
an alternative GNSS constellation. Apart from OGF, I’ve often heard that third
parties run instances that are less about field data collection. I’d expect
them to favor this option, but it’s hard to know how much they need it because
we never hear much from them.

If we do make this an option, do you think the approach in this PR is
appropriate, or would it be cleaner to just hide the entry points via CSS or
something?

(In case you’re referring to OpenHistoricalMap, the GPS trace functionality
sees [some very occasional use](https://www.openhistoricalmap.org/traces) in
OHM. Field surveys aren’t the most common workflow for historical mapping, but
we welcome them just like OSM does. OHM might potentially be interested in
disabling other features that OGF also wants disabled, but that should be a
separate discussion.)
