Unfortunately not an option. Any data has to stay in-house since it would be
considered to high a security risk to store it externally (it's not really,
because we only have security theatre). And I have looked at many other
options (including OpenOffice, Excel + Ruby Win32, DabbleDB and others) but
they either require data stored outside our network (No DabbleDB which I
like) or have no easy access to 3rd party or open source apps (very large
installation of Mac/Wintel machines in a very restricted environment). This
basically reduces the application to a web-based, internally hosted
solution.I've tried working with Excel (I mean really tried) but I just end
up shaving the yak with the amount of work I have to do just to get it to
work on my machine (with our BOE-Ruby-WIn32 doesn't even work) let alone
having a deployed, semi-usable application.

I don't want to re-invent the wheel. I use a Mac because I don't like doing
work I don't have to. If Excel could do everything, I would use it.
