As a counterpoint: I've had a large assortment of Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba
laptops and desktops over the last decade, and found all of them to be utter
rubbish hardware-wise compared to almost all of the Apple hardware I've had.
Admittedly, I did have one Powerbook that had a serious problem, which was then
fixed for free under warranty.

I'm sorry that your experience of one model (the cheapest they sold) was less
than perfect and has emotionally scarred you for life. Perhaps some therapy?

Or competent and reliable unix-based systems in other people's books.

Yes, it's true, Microsoft still cripples parts of MS Office for Mac
deliberately in parts. Being able to do UPDATE or CREATE calls via ODBC in MS
Excel is still missing for no good reason.

Sorry, which linux? Which hardware? For what purpose?

If you're talking about running it as a production server, I don't think anyone
here's going to disagree with you, except perhaps some hardcore solaris nerds.
I think we're all in agreeance there.
