Dunno, but I find it extremely handy for web-testing using Parallels Desktop to 
have multiple VMs running XP + IE6, XP + IE7 and XP + IE8, given that those are 
the browsers where things fall apart the most...

In the past I've also had a VM that ran Solaris in roughly the same 
configuration as our servers, which has proven to be useful occasionally with 
some troublesome binary installs.

Good question... from what I've found with Parallels, the virtual machine 
shields you from a lot of these issues. I expect VMWare has similar advantages.
