Hi All, I am trying to figure the best way to reliably handle mail deliveries from rails. Specifically how to handle mail server connection errors and errors on the outgoing mail server-side. For example if the connection between the mail server is down, or spewing its own errors (or someone changes the password on the server!).
I assume if there is a connection error and config.action_mailer.raise_delivery_errors = false then that mail delivery is not spooled anywhere by default, and dies. If this is so, then what are the options? - Halting a user's experience because of a mail delivery error is not an option. - Install something like postfix or sendmail on the same box as the webserver and set it to relay out to the mail server? As I understand it, most smtp servers have spooling and retry features. - Use a something like resque or other ruby/spooling mechanism to handle this. There do seem to be a few gems out there that purport to solve this problem. - Use a non-SMTP based API used by a service provider such as SendGrid. This doesn't necessarily solve the problem altogether but may be more reliable or offer a better mechanism for reporting errors. Love to hear your thoughts.
