Kelly and Ren`e,

As a parent and a commander I do not like the idea of pumping the children
full of sugar and sweets. I have kids in my outpost that would eat pure
sugar if you let them. They have been caught taking the sugar packs from
the coffee area and downing them. I have done spaghetti, BBQ chicken, BBQ
ribs, Home fries, French Fries, Onion rings, Burrito's / Taco's Enchilada's
right now I am trying to perfect with the help of my lovely wife. I am
looking at starting to work with making a stew upon my return home. The
majority of everything is cooked with cast Iron. I have a large cast Iron
Skillet, A cast Iron Griddle, and 2 cast iron Dutch ovens(#8 &#12) The
larger one doubles as my fry daddy. So you are open to so much more you can
do on a campout. The next question you need to ask your self is how is the
food suppose to be prepared. (Coleman stoves, Open Fire Pits, or Even BBQ
Grill. Depending on the area. You may have to haul the old BBQ grill.
Other than the open pit BBQ you can prefect your meals at home with the
family using the Coleman stove and a BBQ. The BBQ you can use to simulate
the open pit. Instead of BBQ bricks use wood instead. Unless you have a gas
BBQ. Remember we are to teach the boys all this stuff. We are to be
getting them ready for them to leave and be on there own. You could make a
whole merit out of Cooking.

Example for one month.
Week 1
Have the boys take a piece of paper and develop a meal plan for 9 meals. It
is your job to help them make the meals balanced. Make a copy of the list
your self. Remember that you need to tell the boys to keep there list
because they are going to need them for the next couple of weeks.

Week 2
Taking the same list we need to figure how much food we are going to need to
buy and how we are going to have to prepare it. Keep in mind what the
Cooking Merit states. (Sorry I don't have my book with me for the exact
quote) But you have to use Baking, Firing and boiling. Look at the merit.

Make sure that you menu covers all this. Passout permission slips

Week 3
Shopping day. Take the boys to Safeway, Albertson's what ever market is
close. With the numbers from last week take the boys and have them figure
out how much it is going to cost for just the food required.

Week 4
Cooking Day. Make it fun for all you can cook some of the items to
accomplish the requirements of the merit.

Just a thought for planing to win. The boys get a chance to cook in the
safety of home and not in the woods. Then the clean-up at the end takes
care of the majority of the requirements.

Just a thought from the chair out here.
