<snip!>

*I've done both RR and now, BSA for 5 years..

I have found Scouting to NOT in any way be "inexspensive" tho it
is "affordible" for all who want to be there. You slowly catch the
fire...

Let me start to ask back.. what's the "cost" to develop Character?

Many people are willing to chip in for their kids College Tuition.
I work where I do so that *perhaps.. my son Josh can attend a
excellent School and live in the dorm like a yuppie<G>

For that "dream" *I'm willing to make the investment..and it's a
fair streach! *But a friend calls Scouting "Character Insurance"
He figures that Scouting is going to be a core link to his sons,
and their choices in life.. *He wants good stuff to happen.

*For many-many "money" is for something else.. and yes families
judge the outcome to "value" the "worth" of an experiance..

Scout boys and Ranger boys are basicly the same..
-------------------------------------------------

Scouts tries HARD to walk the line with affordible adventure.
...still, some of my Royal Ranger friends could not hack T328
because of the "price" asked at the outset. *I regreted that,
but we all have to choose what we will *invest in..

*There are ways to make it work out....*Honestly-

For the boys, there
is funds availble to attend Summer camp ($180.00) by requesting
a grant from the council.. and we do hold fundraisers each year to
bring that fee down to $100 for the week.. for all who work the
fundraiser (Hard work By the way)

I'd guess to build a Scout.. a Parent might easily face $300
a year in uniforms and fees, and more for these high Adventure trips.

"Sea base" came in at $1200.00 per Scout and we worked the fund raiser's
to get that down to $600.. The National "Jambo" was $2,000 plus 3
sets of uniforms, luggage and additional gear! A week at Philmont
might be $600 to $1,000...

There is a Uniform bank in the area, *I wear a shirt I got at the
Goodwill<G> and some salvaged shorts from a former Scouter.. I'm
thinking of the BSA training called "Woodbadge" and it is $200 plus
2 uniforms, simular to the Nat'l Academy... "thinking$$$$$" <G>

But as a "Scouter Dad" I buy all my own gas and pay for food and
fees for every camp, just like the Scout. IN addition to all this,
is the Yuppie gortex rain gear, REI tent and zero degree bag...

Josh runs a Jansport internal frame pack, and a kelty external frame
pack as a "spare"... "Hot Chilies" Polypro underwear,Patigonia fleese,
and Titainium cook set<G> He keeps his pack ready, spare batteries on
top and nalgyne bottles that fit a REI water filtration unit...

*You know.. all piled on his bedroom floor<GRIN!>
