Some see RangerNet as a type of cyber campfire, where the commanders gather
together after the boys are down for the night. Around that campfire they
exchange stories, jokes, remembrances, prayer requests and testimonies, and
tips about doing a better job in the Rangers ministry.

If RangerNet would stick to this ideal, things would be great. But too
often folks on RangerNet forget that the boys are not necessarily asleep in
their tents (Rangers may be lurking on RangerNet listening to their
commanders). Or the arguments get so loud that they would wake up the boys
if they were asleep.

Royal Rangers is a great ministry. I've been in it since 1969, and during
that time have forged many life-long friendships. I admire many of the
folks on RangerNet, as they have certainly contributed much to the campfire
and the discussions over the years. While I haven't met many of the folks
on RangerNet, I'd like to think that I have forged some friendships through
this campfire too. And I value the opportunity to exchange ideas, ask
questions, and to learn from those who have had more experience than I have
had in various areas of this ministry.

But there have been times that I have left this campfire for months at a
time because too often the discussion strays too far from Royal Rangers,
and as you correctly pointed out, the same subjects are repeated over and
over. Some of the topics that are raised can be "solved" on RangerNet, but
others can't. For those, there is a more appropriate forum for change --
through your district and regional leadership, and through talking with the
national leadership when they are in your district or region. In my
opinion, RangerNet is not the appropriate place for arguing, for example,
about national policies because the national leadership is not around this
campfire. Nothing can be solved about women in Rangers or NTC or many of
the other repetitive subjects that come up on RangerNet.

When I do return to the campfire after an absence, I do so in hopes that
things have changed. Unfortunately, I'm always disappointed.

My son used to be a subscriber to this list. I had him unsubscribe. Too
much was posted here that he did not need to see. Even though he is now 17,
he still doesn't need to see the way some Royal Rangers leaders behave
themselves in this forum. I wish that were not true, as RangerNet could be
a valuable training tool to help prepare him to assume his position of
leadership in the outpost when he turns 18 a little later this spring.

That was the promise of RangerNet that Duane addressed in one of his
messages today. With the growth of the Internet e-mail lists like this one,
and web sites like the various district sites and RangerDJ's site, are
great ways to share ideas and resources. I for one add my vote to yours
that RangerNet be kept positive and uplifting.

As the footer on all RangerNet messages states: "Let the Golden Rule be
your daily rule."
