Outpost 193 of Southpointe Christian Center in Sacramento went on a backpack trip to Pt Reyes National Seashore this past weekend. There were 3 commanders, 1 Expedition Ranger, 3 Adventure Rangers and 5 Discovery Rangers(3 of them 8-year-olds). We chose to walk from Pt Reyes Youth Hostel to Coast Camp, which is a walk up a small hill, across a ridge and down to the ocean for a total of 1.5 miles. From the ridge line, you can see about 10 miles north and south along the Pt Reyes shoreline and we could also see where the entire Pt Reyes National Seashore was burned off about 25 years ago. There are plenty of critters of all kinds to see. At our campsite, we tussled with 4 raccoons who felt that our food was their food, and that anything left in the open was fair game. They entered tents, foraged thru backpacks and generally were a pain. Good thing the park provides big steel food lockers! We also got visited by a red fox who picked up some food scraps while he looked us over pretty closely and a large covey of quail that scurried back and forth thru camp and along the trail. In the evening, we caught a glimpse of part of an experimental European white deer herd as they walked by. While we were playing at the ocean, we were observed by several sea otters as they swam by. Watching the pelicans as they swim and dive for food was also interesting. The Japan current rolls past Pt Reyes and the water is really COLD. Didn't seem to bother the boys as they played in the surf, but the commanders are older, wiser and have thinner skin. We stayed dry. Gathered up a bunch of wood and fuel and had one of the Adventure Rangers start us a one match A-frame fire. The ocean, the surf, the fire, the critters, the boys. We shared stories, sang songs and enjoyed the presence of each other and of the Lord. In the morning, we packed up, policed the area and walked out on a different trail that took us on a 3.5 mile walk along the ocean headlands and thru a eucalyptus forest back to the youth hostel. We loaded up and drove out to Pt Reyes lighthouse for a visit. Impressive! You can see for 30 miles north and south along the beach and out to sea. It is 308 steps down to visit the actual lighthouse. The problem is, it's 308 steps back up to the parking lot! Loaded up and hit the road home. All of our 8-year-olds made every step and walked the entire route. We are very proud of Jake, Jamison and Tony! Amazingly, not one boy slept on the way back...
