Bro Stan,
Being someone who came from a learning disabled background, I would be the
first to assist. My learning disability is mathematics, I have difficulty in
doing it at all. Though it is mild, I know there are others who's situation
is more severe than mine. Right now the ministry really doesn't to appear to
have anything available to boys and Commanders who are handicapped. It puts
things like hikes and camping out of the question and reach for many, so Why
doesn't program adapt I wonder? It all goes to the level of Commitment that
goes forth. The Special needs Child Needs Christ. How do you reach him if
the normals are doing all of these things and he can't go? The normals don't
understand and are even afraid of the disability because it the
unpredictability of their actions, but let me say that these folks need just
as much love and attention as anyone else. Some have needs that require a lot
of attention and it the Cmdr is concerned enough about that child, he should
take it upon himself to learn about that child's disability so that he can
accommodate it. A boy should not be allowed to attend an activity just
because he can't physically do the activity, He can come and watch and often
times, that is just enough for them. No one said he had to hook on a rope and
repel down rocks with the rest of the boys, but he will watch and really be
astute about it. If you have Children like this it is very important to talk
to the parents and learn about the best ways to accommodate the boys, it
doesn't really matter if the boy can't do the activity as long as he learns
about Christ the most importantly. Please don't shut these kids out because
of their disabilities or inabilites. If God did that to us, where would we
be?

Blessings,

Cmdr Mike Burke
