just what do you refer to when you call someone a "kiwi"?

Hello again,
A kiwi is a pet-name for a native of New Zealand. Named after our famous
bird called the Kiwi. This is a nocturnal bird with no wings. It
spends its night poking its long beak around the forest floor for
insects and grubs, etc.. Beats me why NZ'ers get called kiwis. I am
only an honourary kiwi though. (British born but lived in New Zealand
since 1972. age 1)
