Rappelling Safety Merit Requirements

1. Become familiar with the information in a Rappelling Course Safety 
manual approved by a recognized ropes course agency or instructor.

2. Explain verbally to a recognized instructor the danger of adverse 
weather at a rappelling site.

3. Explain why all equipment should be inspected before each use at the 
rappelling site. Explain how to properly care for ropes and rappelling 
equipment:
   a. Physical examination of ropes for wear
   b. Washing and drying procedeures
   c. Examination of harnesses and hard gear
   d. Coiling and bagging of ropes

4. Explain to your instructor the importance of knowing rappelling 
commands and communication with your belay person and the rappelling 
instructor.

5. Explain the importance and demonstrate under the supervision of an 
approved instructor the proper way to belay a person "on line".

6. Demonstrate in the presence of an approved instructor how to place on 
a chest harness and hook onto the top safety line.

7. Demonstrate in the presence of your rappelling instructor how to tie 
the following:
   a. water knot on webbing
   b. figure 8 follow through knot
   c. figure 8 on the bight knot
   d. prusicking hitch
   e. munter hitch

8. Demonstrate in the presence of your instructor the proper use of the 
following commands:
Participant - On belay, off belay, on rappel, off rappel, slack, haul, 
safety lin on and locked, safety line off, fall
Belayer - Belay on, belay off, rappel, off rappel, slacking, hauling, 
safety line on and locked, safety line off

9. Demonstrate to your instructor your ability to select for fit and 
wear a rappelling seat harness.

10. Demonstrate the proper use of a figure 8 as it is placed on a 
rappelling line.

11. Demonstrate to your instructor the proper manner of asking 
permission to come into the rappelling site (tower, platform, etc.) and 
any safety rules pertaining to that specific rappelling site.

12. Demonstrate to your instructor a complete rappel using a top safety 
line and a belayer on the rappel line while no more than six feet above 
ground level. (ground demonstration)

13. Complete in the presence of an approved instructor while hooked into 
a top safety line at least 3 walking rappels, and 2 jumping rappels for 
a distance of at least 50 feet each.

14. With the assistance of an approved instructor as your back-up 
belayer, make at least 4 belays of a rappeller for at least 50 feet 
each.

15. Write a theme of at least 200 words on "What I learned while 
completing my rappelling safety merit". Turn this theme in to your 
rappelling instructor for approval.

16. Take a written test of not less than 25 true or false questions 
given by your rappelling instructor. You must make a score of at least 
80% correct to pass.

Those are the ropes! (Bad pun) Again, watch for typos. It is my 
understanding that these are open to all boys Pioneer age & up.
