*I'm completely carried away by a book I picked up off
the discout table, .. a journal of a Dad and 14 year
old son flying around the USA in a 1942 stillson bi-plane.
"Dad" is a former A6 Indruder driver who flew off the USS Enterprise
CVA 65 in 1972 Vietnam yankee station.. (Been there<G>)
"Son" is 14 with a gameboy on the knee and finds flying thru the clouds
and accross the land "old hat boreing".....<g>
Togather they have no plan other than to fly by day and camp at night<G>
for an entire summer... 500ft to 2,000 ft over the land. *Low enough
to read hyway signs, billboards and countless farm fields...
The 1942 Stillson was a military 2 seat trainer... with a big Radial
engine that carries 42 gal's of fuel and burns 12 perhour and a quart of
oil! *It flys at about 75 to 100mph and is a "taildragger"....
meaning one wheel is on the tail...
"Dad" fell in love with it's limited power, range, and obsolete nature,
for there are far quicker,safer,*cheaper to maintain aircraft availible..
But in his words... They...
"*Lack Soul..."
What does this pilot call "soul"?
To him it's the sound of the prop as it turns 6 times and he fires the
ignighters on the big Radial to a pop!Flash! and cloud of smoke... a
shudder thru the air frame and then settles off into a rumbleing thunder!
*Oil film sprays back on his sholders and on to his face<G>
>From the back seat he can't see forward.. untill it's roll'n down the
runway * power on and "up on two wheels!"
This is a real airplane! No fuel injection... and only a liquid compass
radio and airspeed indicator! *It cannot fly at night or thru weather..
makeing it a trip that hops from one deserted airport to another small
town strip.....
*Lets take off! Rrrrrrrrrrrrroar!
*POWER TO THE STOP... 55-60-65-68- and you feel the air shift on the wings
as you pull back.... *suddenly your off the ground and speed to 75!
The thunder fills the pastures as you lift off to the clouds!
A map on the knee.. hand on the stick... eye on the ground and compass!
Where in the world do you want to go?<G>
*Your flying!
