*Part of the Great thing about being 47 is that I can remember
a pre-TV culture... *barely<G>
My Heritage comes from a California based Assembly of God church
and the *call to service of a WW2 vet.
At that time...in America, most people strugled to own a small
2 bedroom home and maintain one car, with the Father likely working
as a Carpenter-Truck driver-Dairyman-Baker-Painter *Blue collar
job.
My home had a front room and an area rug<G> *mayby a Piano...
and 2 chairs.
*Church was the major *social point of the week.
That means:
Dad worked, got paid on Wed.night and we shoped at the store for the
weeks food that... Mom cooked every night..
No movies..
No Tv..
No Paper..
*of course No computer/Rangernet!<G>
...So when Sunday came, it was special.. and I knew it.<G>
We'd pile in the '55 chevy and drive to Norwalk Assembly of God
Norwalk,Calif. on Pioneer Blvd.
It would start with a chilly sunday school room.. and flow to
the Main service where I'd be dismissed to "childrens church"
Following that I'd come back to fellowship with my friends
playing "Tag" between the parked cars.. and stand by my Dad as he
talked with the "Brouther'n"
Sunday afternoon we'd return early for *Prayer.. and then attend
the Sunday Eve. service where *powerful praise would inhabit the temple of
the Lord, and we'd be baptized by the HolyGhost and FIRE!
*My earliest recolection of the TV was with sermons being preached
about it's satanic influence... as a "god of the air" and it's ability
to mezmerize people...
*On time payments to Sears Robuck... we got one<G>
It was made out of Walnut.. very small with a round "tube" in a square
frame.. and it took several min's to "warm up"... It had a large
"bakelight" handle on the side with numbers..
My Mom put a crochet "doil-ly" on its top and a vase of flowers<G>
I rolled the "hassock" over.. and on a Sunday Afternoon we saw a
young "fire-breathing Preacher" look right in the front room of our home
and preach the healing Gospel of Jesus Christ!
