I think that you may be on to something here. I recognize these tendencies
in our kids today. I do notice also that when control is relinquished to
the kids they must be allowed to fail. We often times pick up the slack
and thereby exasperate them. When you allow the kids to make decisions,
you also need to allow them to fail as well as succeed. Of course we want
to see them succeed and lending some "encouragement" in the right direction
is helpful, but when kids reject your "friendly advice" we need to allow
them to reap the consequences. Sometimes they may even surprise us and
succeed in spite of our thoughts. This is the idea behind the Gold Bar
Staff in the Outpost. Allow the boys to lead the way all the way down to
age 9 in Pioneers. This is how the Ministry of Royal Rangers was designed
by our Creator through His servant Johnnie Barnes. It does work. Go for
it. That's my opinion.

*I've been reading several papers by education reserchers and gleaning
what I can about *my oputpost and what I see going on in Royal Rangers
today..
We adults are familiar with the term "burnout" but we generaly think it to
be related to the workplace...
WHAT IF.. "Burnout" had no bottom age and in fact was what your boys
were acting out of in the meger performance of their achievement goals..
How would they talk and act? Would a burned-out Ranger show disengagement
and apathy? perhaps...thoughtlessness and aggression? "Tuneing out" or
acting out might signal the fact the Ranger was "BURNING OUT!"
In these cases the boy might just "go thru the motions" handing in
uninspired work and spaceing out waiting for freedom to arrive...
*That's the way it is sometimes with MY PERFECT OUTPOST!<G>
Let's talk about the truth of burnout....see if this makes sence!
The best predictor about "burn-out" is that it does NOT come from too much
work, too little time, or too little reward or compensation.. |Rather,
burn-out comes from powerlessness -a lack of control over what one is
doing... *Lacking control or a sence of "Knowing what to do" breeds
that hopeless "I give up" attitude!
*What's the cure?

"the key to transforming student/Ranger apathy into student/Ranger
engagement, Mr.Kohn suggests, may be as simple as allowing
students/Rangers to make decision about their learning.
Alfie Kohn- Phi Delta Kappan 1998"
"Those who feel more control over what happens to them rarely become Ill
despite high levels of stress..."
"Everday/meeting ought to include at least one block of time where the
students/Rangers can decide what they will do"
"Parting with power is not easy,if only because the results are less
predictible without control"
*Opinions?
The Patrol meeting...
The Outpost planning sessions...
GOLD BAR staff meetings
Time for Sr.Guide to become "Sr Guide" ect.
