Hi Noel,

This is what I do:

Cut good cotton cloth into 2 in" squares
put in tin, with lid on - make a small hole in lid of tin
put tin on fire - gas is best so you can see which smoke is which
smoke will pour out of the hole in the tin.
when smoke stopes - put a screw in the hole (to seal off the air) and lift 
tin off fire (or turn off gas)
wait till cold before opening it (otherwise it will burst into flame)
...
