Dear Randall,

I am a new Trailblazer Commander and therefore not familiar with
Ranger policy toward adapting merits to related subjects. However, I
have been a 4-H member, a Vo Ag teacher, a FFA Advisor and a
professional mechanic. After reviewing the auto merit, I believe any
interest in tractor and heavy equipment repair falls under the
automotive repair profession and job description. This also includes
small engine repair. The principles involved with gasoline and diesel
engines, drive trains and suspensions are the same whether it is a car,
a tractor, or a bulldozer.

Don't discourage your pioneer, encourage him, pointing out the
similarities between all powered equipment including alternate fuel
systems. Some understanding of differences need to be noted, i.e. hours
of operation vs miles, hydraulic drive sys vs mechanical drive sys, 12 v
vs 24 v electrical sys. You may want to consider participation in an
FFA or 4-H tractor driving course and competition equivalent to the
automobile drivers permit.

Also, if you review the safety merit and home safety merit there
are related areas covering the operation of powered equipment and safety
inspections. The hobby merit allows great freedom
to the Commander to approve projects tied to a pioneer's interests.
Don't forget, this pioneer may be the perfect mentor to other pioneers
with similar interests such as go-carting.

I hope this will help you.

Sincerely
David (Bud) Weiser

PS I'm a 63B40 with the 218FA in Portland Or. I understand you were
in the Nat Guard.
