When I was going through my compass and orienteering course, the markers that were used were plastic margarine buckets. On the bottom of the bucket was a piece of black duct tape that had been cut into different shapes. When we found the buckets we had to put a piece of paper over the black cut out shape and make a rubbing of the shape with a crayon. Shapes that were used included star, square, triangle, oval, rectangle, cross etc...

This worked out rather well since the buckets were halfway buried in wet, dew laden forest undergrowth and the plastic buckets and tape were waterproof. However we did have a hard time finding one of the buckets, since it had been hidden in the crevice of a tree limb 5 feet above our heads.

Although we didn't come in first in building our fires, and tying our knots, we did manage to be the first to navigate through the woods.
