I too had some reservations and still don't know the full impact of the
changes. We will get those first hand next weekend. On a campout 2
weekends ago I did enjoy the company of one of the National Staff that is
developing the new program and I asked him what he liked about the
changes.
He explained the new changes would take Royal Rangers from being limited
to Indians and Cowboys and Pioneers to those things and alot more.
Taking away the Straight Arrows and Buckaroo Titles gave way to Adventure
type titles that don't limit one to just cowboy and indian stuff. He
explained that if the commander in charge was gifted in a certain area
for example backpacking he could taylor his Outpost around that type of
adventure. If he was into FCF type stuff he could go that way. If he
was into modern day stuff he could excell in that. This brings the gifts
of the commander out.
Once this was explained in this manner my fears were squelched. It was
no longer a threat to the way I was doing Rangers it merely allowed
others to bring in newer ideas and methods to teach Royal Rangers.
Getting away from the theme allows so much more freedom to go new and
exciting places with our Rangers.
I will say at this time I find it hard to beat our Royal Ranger Program
as it is. However, the reigns are being loosed so we can run in the
direction we want to run. At this time I think most will stay with
traditional Camping and boy scout type Royal Rangers. It still works
today!
Take a look at the Challengers Program. For the most part from what I
have seen it was primarly TrailRangers. Most young men were in the
Program for the Scouting type activities if they wanted to be Youth and
put on cool dudds they could have joined youth and hung out.
In my opinion where we have lost revealance is not taking advantage of
the patrol system and junior leaders and raised up a Outpostl lead by
young men. If you empower your young men to lead and delegate that
leadership to the boys and as a Leader make those dreams happen then your
outpost will remain strong and flourshish.
My two cents. No charge!
