It is only about 2 years since the UK government decided to sanction a
national lottery. They excused it by legislating that a proportion of it
should go to "charity". Since it began it has been surrounded by
controversy. They company who was appointed to run it were suspected of
having been chosen for political favours. they were/are a profit making
organization and were appointed ahead of others who were not.
Because of its connection with "charity" the contributions to local and
national charities were seriously affected. The "charities" selected by the
appointed board included things like restoring old houses and things which
really should have been supported by tax. My wife worked for an organization
which worked at training people with learning disabilities with a view to
getting them employment. It was supported by the lottery who decided to pull
the plug despite the organization exceeding all the targets they were given.
Personally, I am against gambling because I believe that it is prone to
corruption and brings out the worst in people - even at the level of a local
raffle. It's amazing how much jealousy can be engendered by someone winning
a small prize.
A definition of the national lottery is, "a voluntary tax for those bad at
maths".
