Subj: [RR] *Thin ICE! GMA Merit *question!
Date: 2/8/99 3:27:57 PM Central Standard Time

*I'm looking at the required merits for GMA and questioning
the repetitive requirements that cross-over each other...
I've been honest in reporting the performance of my Outpost in
achievements as well as leadership... Full and complete success
of the entire GMA requirements without carefull promotion or guidence
seems unlikely or farfetched..
The indications are that a 12 years old should be able to complete these
required tasks....
Is that reasonable? *National Authorizes it...
*I'm steping onto *Thin Ice.. But.. repetitive tasks seem to
delay the advancement, when we hold to boy to seperate achieveing
of each sign-off...
You may find Commanders awarding credit in several merits for
one display of skill.... *yes or no!
(A Ranger does not....)
For example:
In the Bachelor.. we have"prepare and cook 3 meals for your family"
In the Camping: "cook a complete meal over a campfire ect."
In the Wild. Surv. "cook a meal without utensils"
And then we require the "Cooking merit"
In Pathfinder... you hike 5 miles and attend 3 orienteering meets.
In Camping you.. you hike 5 miles with a map and compass
*Then earn the Hikeing Merit where you hike 5 miles...
In the Hikeing you: show an assembled pack ect.
In the Camping you: show an assembled pack for a 5 day trip.
*That was done back in Pioneers powderhorn!
*The answer
----------- I know is... No More-No Less.. however has anyone ever
looked and saw the redundent nature of the requirements in "Rank
advancement" and the Merit's?
The GMA has 17 required merits...
The following to my thinking might be combined as they Echo
each other with outdoor skills...
Camping
Wilderness surviveal
Tool Craft
Hikeing
Nature
These seem to compliment the homelife:
Bachelor
Cooking
Citizenship
Home Safety
Hobby
These seem to fall under Health/Medical awareness:
CPR
First aid
Physical Fitness
These seem to promote Christian service/Spiritual awareness:
Bible
Christian service
Light for the lost
*With no Standardized mark to guide a Commander's pen.. a hap-hazard
standard of achievement is now in effect..
Opinions?

> Personally, I like the idea of repeating the task.
*Understand it's me on the thin ICE so... let me jump up and down<G>
-----------------------------------------
You may like the Idea...But the boys don't.
*The boys want achievements to reflect the "dream" of achieveing RR's
highest award... and what we offer is the same old thing over and over..
How about some Vocational exploreation?
How about personal finance management?
How about *Christian Traditions/History/or respect for others beliefs?
By demonstrating the task
> a number of times over a period of time, the ability is reinforced and
perhaps
> even mastered. Too many time, a task is done just to get it done and not
> really mastered, but passed. A boy may cram a verse into memory and not have
> it the next day. A boy may pass a task by crammin, but not really know how
to
> do it. Repetition helps with mastery
*We Master tool craft...enough to impress a Forest Ranger, but I don't see
a micrometer.. sextent.. Voltage guage... or a Toqure wrench..
...the tools of "Dispute resolution- or anger management" should be taught
with the same authority as passing a sheath knife....
How about the "Critical Thinking Merit"
*Have I fell in the Cold Water yet? <G>

*Then I'm failing my GMA boys when I try to shape a campout for Pioneers
and others to *enjoy... I gear it for the majority, and a GMA comes
along about 1% of the time... a GMA sees the faults of the Commanders and
the weakness of the Outpost...
Our *ministry is broad reaching... and our abilities taxed to go easy on
"the back row" and "raise the standard" for the GMA achiever..
Do you see the cross-purpose? *the result is a hap-hazard expectation..
expecting the Moon from one boy and accepting anything from another..
The GOLD MEDAL of ACHIEVEMENT...........
That indicates we prepare him to replace us as RR Leaders... But
what do we do to prepare him for life in the 21st century?
*College?
*Military?
*Work?
*Family?
*Yes he does what we tell him... *are we telling him enough?

May I put on some skates?
I encuorage my boys to earn the GMA. I support them 100% and I hope they all
earn it. Something that I did not do as a young Ranger. I believe in giving
honor where honor is due, but too many times these young men are put on a
Pedistal.
I hear many Commanders say to Rangers "The GMA is the ultimate award you can
get in Rangers." Hmmm, I thought the ultimate award in Rangers was a deep,
personal relationship with Christ.
These young men work hard to earn this award and deserve recogniton but I
would hope there is more meaning than just getting a shiny medal on their
uniform. Is there any new understanding of Life and Christ that can be
applied? What about any insight or guidance of God's calling on their life?
What about humility?
Sadly,I have seen many of GMA'ers lifted so high that they fell very hard
away from Christ. Yes, I have seen many GMA'ers become oustanding Commanders
and Christian men and Praise the Lord for that, but I have also seen many
nonGMA'ers do the same including my best friend and my cousin, both Commanders
in my outpost.
Don't get me wrong, I am not against the GMA. Like I said, I encourage each
of my boys to strive for the GMA and I have had a few earn it, but it is not
the main focus. I will never push any of them if it will comprimise their
relationship with Christ.
Again, this is only my opinion and observations in my small chunk of earth on
this Planet, so season with a grain of salt if you like. Well, its getting
pretty cold on this ICE and I don't skate well...besides this CaliBoy would
rather be in the warm Sun! God Bless.
