Subj: [RR] The Heart of a good Commander...

I recently have been reading about teachers and what they do to maintain
their "stoke factor" and wanted to share several points from a paper
called: "identify and integrity in teaching"

One challenge I face weekly is the wilderness experience of getting in
touch with the many boys who come to my outpost.. because of the
turn-over, and the nature of their reserve.. I find that I desire to
draw out something in them that I found in my heart for the Royal Ranger
ministry..

There's a danger in involving your heart in Royal Rangers...if you
stand before the boys for very long you will come to know what I mean.

(If you don't think they got yah..try walking away)

*...good teaching cannot be reduced to technique. Good teaching comes
from the identity and integrity of the teacher."

(From paper)

"...the premise is simple but the implications are not. It will take
time to unfold what I do and don't mean by those words. But here is one
way I put it: in every class I teach, my ability to connect with the
students, and to connect them with the subject, depends less on the
methods I use than on the degree to which I know and trust myself,
and happen to be willing to become vulnerable in the service of
learning.."

....*Good Commanders join self and subject and the students in the
fabric of life...

Be careful not to put YOUR LIFE as the mark but rather *Christ!
...however, Life has many chances and choices and understanding comes
at a dear price, one thing we can do is share our lives and the choices
we made.. Our testimony.. and reveal in hand of God upon us as well as
the boys..

....as we weave the fabric that joins the boys to the subjects, the
heart is the loom on which the threads are tied.....

The courage required of a Commander is more the "courage to keep the
heart open" ...in those moments when the heart is asked to hold more
than is able...

We teach the WHOLE BOY- Body, mind, and *spirit..

--------------------
*I know this has been brief, but it provoked my thoughts..
and encouraged me to open my heart before the boys..

Praise

My wife and I just finished a Kids Crusade last Thursday night at our
church. We had the crusade Sunday morning and Monday Thursday evening.
It was a lot of fun and very rewarding. Our theme was In Search Of ???.

Every night of the crusade, my oldest son was looking for something to put
his faith in. On Sunday, he had found a food machine , Monday was the
perfect pet, Tuesday was an instruction book for life, Wednesday was a time
machine, and on Thursday was a treasure map. Of course, everything blew up
on him. The food machine started throwing out raw spaghetti, the perfect
pet was a balloon dog that popped when I petted him, the instruction book
caught fire in my hands when I tried to open it, and the time machine put
him in the middle of a war!. The map led him to the platform where there
was a cross. It was then that he realized that all he had to do was put his
faith in Jesus.

We had 75 125 kids in attendance at every meeting. Several kids accepted
Christ and many more spent time praying for friends, parents, relatives, and
teachers.

Now for my concerns

There were some behaviour problems during the crusade meetings. I had to
stop a couple of times and correct a child from the platform or ask one of
my helpers to take care of a situation. My helpers, some of which were
parents, did not seem to know how to correct a child. Still others who had
volunteered to help, felt that they needed to stand in the aisles or in the
back of the church and correct children from there.

At the end of every service, we gave the children an opportunity to come
forward and pray. This was their opportunity to pray for whatever was on
their mind. I had to almost beg the adults to come forward and pray with
the children. The same adults that are the first ones to the altar to pray
with other adults seemed scared to pray with a child. The ones that did
come forward were obviously uncomfortable with the children.

Conclusion

I have concluded that most adults do not know how to work with children.
They do not know how to talk to, correct, or pray with them. THIS IS A
PROBLEM.

Solution

I have started today working on a workshop for those that want to work with
children. I have not set a time schedule for it, or filled in all the
topics.

Help

Many of you have had a lot of experience working with children. I
personally have been working in childrens ministry for about 25 years. I
would like your opinions. What topics do you think should be included in
this workshop? Send me your ideals and feel free to expand on them if you
like.

A final note

The crusade materials we used were written by my family. My wife even made
one of the puppets that we used. If you are interested in more detailed
information on the crusade, please contact me and I will send you some of
the skits we used. I hope to have pictures of the crusade on my home page
by the end of the week.

*Great message....

here's my 2 cents...

There are forces at work that convince children that they are the center
of the world... we foster care on them and treat them with preference
to our own comfort...

This sowing of "yur special" sometimes builds walls to re-ality<G>
(I had a "special ed" kid tell me it was against the law for me to ask him
a "hard question" and he assumed he was above the norm... i.e. "special")

Life in the USA has become a playground, and the message of salvation
has to breach the media blitz for "coacoa puffs" and "nintendo video"

We struggle first to *REACH the children... and do not do a very good job.

*More of what I mean..
----------------------

My childhood would today be considered "poverty" for we had no
entertainment center in a "den"... *I played outdoors.

My "Leagalistic" heritage spoke out against Movies, TV and theater,
and told me that if I acted wrong in the House of GOD... frankly
that I had better make my peace- right quick!<G>

When "Jiggers Johnson" a Vantriliquest Childrens Minister came..
*It shocked me to transform my church into a "theater"...

I had a good time, but *never for got it was "CHURCH"...

*Nuff of geezer memories...

Today, Kids do not know where they are and what to expect.

Everywhere they turn someone is handing them a "Happy Meal"
with a free toy...

*My opinion is that you put solid food on the table.

(Good Job BTW)
I don't know what you have to do.. it's a Adult problem.

How did you make the book explode<G>

*I sent my previous message, a "off the top of my head geezer
rememberence"

I wanted to ask a reflective question...

What really counts?
-------------------

Our understanding of the mission is to Reach-Teach and Keep...
but we are dealing with kids as they are.. and the subject is
*profound...

How "deep" a decision does a child have to make to gain Salvation?

Thanks for your input Duane. I understand what you're saying and where you
are coming from.

I argued with my grandmother once and found myself sliding across the
kitchen floor. Then the spanking started!

The exploding book is a simple magic trick. There is a lighter inside the
book and a wick that is saturated in lighter fluid. When the book is
opened, you spark the lighter and the lighter fluid sends flames out of the
book. Mine had flames about 3 feet high!

Safety note - wash your hands after putting lighter fluid in. I still had
some fluid on my thumb and it lit as well.. Didn't hurt me, but sure did add
to the effect!
